At approximately 6:10 this morning, the Roselle Park Police Department (RPPD) reported that a suicidal male residing at the Woodside Gardens apartment complex contacted the 911 emergency line stating that he had a gun and was going to kill himself.
RPPD responded to the complex and observed the male subject through his apartment window and confirmed that the man had a gun to his head.
Police secured the area and attempted to speak with the man. Union Count SWAT was contacted and responded on-scene along with RPPD Police Chief Paul Morrison and RPPD Captain Daniel McCaffery.
Negotiators were able to contact the individual by phone and began negotiating with him, requesting he put the gun down and come out of the apartment.
At one point, the individual fired two gunshots within the apartment. It had been determined earlier that there was no one else in the apartment other than the suicidal male.
At approximately 7:45 a.m., the individual agreed to put the gun down and walk out of the apartment, at which time he was taken into custody by police. The individual was transported by ambulance to a mental health facility for examination.
The incident is active and currently under investigation with criminal charges pending. There were no injuries to police, civilians, or the individual. The name of the male has not yet been released to the public.
