The Roselle Park Police Department (RPPD) is currently accepting applications for their 2015 Roselle Park Police Youth Academy. The five-day program is scheduled for August 10th through August 14th. The week-long academy will run from 8:30 a.m. till 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Acceptance into the academy program requires that an applicant will be entering 7th, 8th or 9th grade in September. In its third year, this is the first year that will that those entering the 9th grade will be included in the program. Each cadet will receive an official Roselle Park Youth Academy uniform to wear throughout the week.
Modeled after today’s police academies, the program is designed to provide Roselle Park youth with the opportunities to gain an understanding of the role of a police officer. It includes daily physical training, drill instruction, ceremony protocol as well as instruction in criminal investigation techniques, evidence recovery, patrol practices, and the effect of drugs and alcohol.
The cadets will also participate in field trips to the John H. Stamler Police Academy in Scotch Plains and the Essex County Correctional Facility. They will also attend demonstrations from various special unit that are available to local law enforcement, such as:
- Union County Bomb Squad
- Union County Police HazMat Team
- Union County Sheriff’s K-9 unit
- Union County SWAT team
- New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit
Upon successful completion of the course, the cadets will participate in a graduation ceremony in which they will be presented with a certificate of completion along with a DVD slideshow of their training.
The tuition fee for the program is only $20 and it must included with the application.
Applications are available at Roselle Park Middle School (RPMS) at the Main Office as well as Police Headquarters located at 110 East Westfield Avenue.
