The creation of the Roselle Park Green Team will be voted on through Ordinance 2558 by the governing body.
A Green Team is a requirement of the Sustainable Jersey certification program which was started this year by council. The certification is awarded in various levels by a nonprofit organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability programs. As of this month Roselle Park has achieved the first level – bronze – and is working to achieve Silver certification. Each level provides more avaibility to grants that improve the quality of the borough while reducing waste and improving on environmental measures.
Earlier this year, the Green Team as a matter of protocol to submit to Sustainable Jersey, the ordinance creates the committee as a part of the Roselle Park code book.
As stated in the ordinance, the Green Team will advise and recommend methods for improving municipal operations with environmentally friendly initiatives which are economically and environmentally sounds through research and evaluation. The RP Green Team will submit reports and recommendations to the governing body that include initiatives that are in line with the Sustainable Jersey program; create plans, programs, and educational opportunities that support the creation of a sustainable community; and suggest best practices for more environmentally conscious municipal operations.
The Green Team will collaborate with the municipal government to share resource information and ideas consistent with its mission, encourage participation of the community to solicit ideas on green initiatives, research green initiatives which are environmentally and financially practical.
The Green Team will consist of no more than 40 members which will be a combination of residents and employees of the Roselle Park who will be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by council. All members will be appointed for an initial term of one (1) year ending on December 31, 2019. After then, appointments will be a two-year term. Council liaisons will have one-year terms.
The chairperson of the Roselle Park Green Team will be the Clean Communities Coordinator who shall also serve as a member of the Green Team for the same term as all other members. Such individual shall also serve as the Borough of Roselle Park’s agent for Sustainable Jersey Municipal Certification. Currently, this person is Michele LoManto.
The public hearing and vote on this ordinance is set for the 7 p.m. municipal meeting of December 20th at the Roselle Park Municipal Complex located at 110 East Westfield Avenue.
