Motor Vehicle Stop Turns Up Cache Of Fireworks

On Saturday, June 25, 2011 at approximately 12:03 a.m., Sgt. Theodore Dima was dispatched to the area of Gordon Street at West Westfield Avenue for a report of an erratic driver.

A 9-1-1 caller described a Hyundai 4D driving eastbound, being driven ‘all over the road’. Sgt. Dima observed the Hyundai swerving between the boundaries of its lane, almost sideswiping other eastbound vehicles. A motor vehicle stop on East Westfield Avenue just east of Galloping Hill Road resulted in the discovery of a large amount of assorted fireworks:

Justin Gonzales, age 18, of Scotch Plains was placed under arrest and charged with 21:3-2 (possession of fireworks) and released pending a Roselle Park Municipal Court date of July 7, 2011.

The driver received summonses for 39:4-88(b) (fail to maintain lane), 39:3-13 (drivers license permit restrictions), and 39:3-76.2f (no seatbelt).

The fireworks were turned over to the Union County Bomb Squad for storage and eventual destruction.
