On August 11, 12 at around 10:45 p.m., Patrolman Richard Gaylord stopped a 2001 Volvo near the 300 block of East Westfield Avenue for traffic violations. According to the officer, he found the driver, Gerardo Vera, age 30 of East Orange, exhibiting signs of intoxication. While speaking to Vera, Gaylord also observed that Vera had appeared to urinate on himself. Vera was arrested for DWI and related traffic charges. During arrest Vera was found to be in possession of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was released pending an appearance in Roselle Park Municipal Court.
