East Orange Man Charged With Cell Phone Theft

On Monday, June 20, 2011 at 7:14 p.m., a victim reported a theft of her cell phone while she was at the 7-11 convenience store locate at 565 West Westfield Avenue when she left her cell phone on the cashier counter. The victim stated that she returned back to the store approximately five (5) minutes later but the phone was gone. The cell phone was a black Droid X.

The victim then reported that her son received a message on his cell phone from a male that stated that he had the cell phone and left his phone number to call back.

At 5:13 p.m. on June 20, 2011, the victim contacted the number and spoke with a male who stated that he had her cell phone. During the conversation, the victim stated the male’s demeanor was aggressive and at times vulgar. After this conversation, the victim reported the incident to police.

An initial investigation by Patrolman Robert Harms revealed that the phone number came back to a Vincent A. Maglio, age 32, of East Orange, NJ. Mr. Maglio was contacted and confirmed that he did have the cell phone. Patrolman Harms requested Mr. Maglio to return the cell phone to police headquarters to which he stated that he would make it to headquarters that evening.

As of the following morning Mr. Maglio did not return the cell phone.

Several messages were was left on Mr. Maglio’s phone with no response. A follow up investigation by Detective Matthew Disano resulted in obtaining the video security footage from 7-11 and showed the victim leaving the phone on the counter and a male, positively identified as Vincent Maglio, picking up the phone after being asked by another customer who appeared to ask Mr. Maglio if the phone was his. Mr. Maglio can be seen saying and motioning ‘no’. He waited until the other customer left, then picked up the phone, placed it in his pocket, and walked out of the store.

Mr. Maglio was charged with 2C:20-6 (theft) pending a Roselle Park Municipal Court hearing on July 14, 2011.
