Crop Hunger Walk Day Is April 28, 2012

April 28, 2012 was declared “Crop Hunger Walk Day” at the February 16, 2012 meeting of Mayor and Council. On that day, Roselle Park and Roselle, NJ will join together with other nearby communities to walk for hunger awareness.

An annual event, this year’s walk theme is “Ending Hunger One Step At a Time”.

Crop Hunger Walk is a community fundraising event sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), an international relief, development, and refugee resettlement agency. Money raised by Crop Hunger Walks nationwide is used by CWS to provide food, medical care, disaster relief, and self-help development for needy people around the world. Up to 25% of the money raised in this Crop Hunger Walk will be distributed to local hunger-alleviating agencies in the area where the Walk occurs. These are the agencies chosen by the local CROP Hunger Walk Planning Team to receive funds this year. Their website is www.cropwalk.org (link).

Below are some statistics released by CWS which highlight conditions which are of concern for the group:

  • Hunger in the United States affects over 50,200,000 people.
  • 17,200,000 children in America do not get enough healthy food to eat.
  • 5,600,000 households relied on a food pantry or soup kitchen one or more times in 2009.

This year’s goal is to raise $6,000 locally. To participate in this year’s Saturday 28, 2012 Crop Walk Hunger as a walker, sponsor a walker, or donate, visit the CWS website (link).
