BOE & Teachers’ Union Reach Agreement On RPEA Contract

On June 25, 2013, after months of both private negotiations and public comments, the Roselle Park Board Of Education (BOE) ratified the contract between the BOE and the Roselle Park Education Association (RPEA) and Custodial Maintenance Unit effective July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2015.

The contract provides for a 2% salary increase every year of the contract for a total of a little more than 6% over three years. This is half of what the previous three-year contract stipulated in its salary increase for the teaching staff; that amount was 3.6% salary increase for the 2009-10 school year, 3.9% salary increase for the 2010-11 school year, and 4.2% for the 2011-12 school year.

Other changes in the agreement include the removal of the positions of library clerks, teachers assistants, and nurse’s aides as well as the moving the start of negotiation procedures from November to March. In addition to changes in health insurance where staff with alternative health coverage can receive a waiver payment based on the percentage of teachers who opt out of the school district’s health insurance plan, the contract stipulates tuition reimbursement to the school district by any teacher who leaves the district within four years after taking educational improvement courses.
