BOE Approves Full-Day Kindergarten

At the Sherman School gymnasium yesterday by a vote of 6-1 with one abstention from Barbara Sokol – the Board Of Education (BOE) approved Agenda Item #9, full day kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year.

The public comment portion of the meeting had parents and residents speak overwhelmingly in approval of the full day kindergarten.

After a discussion by the BOE with members Barbara Sokol and Troy Gerten concerned with the costs associated and Alex Balaban speaking of his approval of the program, a vote was taken and the program was approved for the start of the next school year.

No details were provided at the meeting by Superintendent Pedro Garrido nor members of the Board regarding the logistics of providing full-day kindergarten which includes the cost for salaries and materials as well as where to place the increase student population to the district. Currently, Roselle Park School District (RPSD) has half-day kindergarten.

Further information on those matters are to be discussed at the April 1st budget presentation meeting of the BOE which will be held at 7 p.m. in the Roselle Park Middle School Media Center. Interested parties can ask questions during the public portion of the meeting.
