The Roselle Park 14U Softball Team was celebrated at the first September municipal meeting. The 12-player team of girls 14-years-old and under had a championship season.
Second Ward Councilman Joseph Petrosky, a coach himself, presented the team with their Certificates Of Achievement. Head coach Joe Crown, accompanied by assistant coach Juan Tavares, spoke on the 10-1 season and the District 2 Parkway League Championship. Coach Crown’s sincere words gave not only a season overview but the emotional highlights of players giving their best and being recognized for it.
His speech is included in its entirety here:
Myself and Juan have been coaching these girls for the last three years and we have seen them become better players with each passing season. They put in a lot of time and a lot of hard work practicing hours each week and playing games, often in the 90-degree heat but when they were on the field they always gave it their all.
Throughout the season they would often ask questions or ask for tips on how to improve their game. They are a great group of girls both individually and as a team. They’ve always made us proud to be their coaches. I’ve considered myself lucky to be part of this team.
Some of the best softball games I’ve seen were played by this team this year. They had us jump out of our seats and throw our fists in the air. From the outstanding catches in the outfield to the double plays from the infield.
At the plate, the girls were just as awesome.
From the clutch game-winning hits [to] the balls that were hit so hard you knew they were long gone the moment you heard the ball hit the bat. After one of our games this year, the head coach of the opposing team came right up to me and said, ‘Man, your girls can hit.’
We ended our season with a 10-1 record. In the semi-final we were down two runs in the bottom of the last inning but these girls never gave up. We scored three runs that inning and beat Kenilworth 10-9. From there we went on to beat Elizabeth in the final to end the season as champions.
I would like to thank you, girls, for letting me be a part of it.
I’d like to thank you, Juan, for also being a part of it.
