The Board Of Education (BOE) approved the 2017-18 school calendar at the February 7th BOE meeting.
The calendar has the usual 183 days for students with three (3) days built-in for snow days or inclement weather.
Schools will start on Thursday, September 7, 2017, with two half-days. The 2017-18 school year will have schools closed for the first full day of Rosh Hashanah on Thursday, September 21st. The two-day celebration marks the Jewish New Year and begins on the evening of September 20th. In previous years, Roselle Park public schools were closed for the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur but in 2017, the Day Of Atonement starts on the evening of Friday, September 29th.
October has no days off but November has three weeks in a row where students in the elementary and middle schools only have two full-days of instruction. All schools will be closed on Election Day – combining it with a staff in-service day – and are closed later that same week on Thursday and Friday for the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) convention. The following week has half-days for elementary and middle school students Wednesday through Friday for conferences. The third week in November has students going in on Monday and Tuesday for the Thanksgiving break.
BOE member Troy Gerten asked publicly at last Tuesday night’s meeting that the calendar committee research how other school districts deal with conferences so the number of non-full days of instruction in one month are reduced.
The last day of school in 2017 is a half-day on December 22nd. Students return on January 2, 2018.
Spring break begins earlier in 2018 on Friday, March 30th.
The last day of the 2017-18 school year is Wednesday, June 20th, but next year will have half-days for the last week of school.
If more than three days are used for snow or inclement weather, the following days will become school days in the order listed below:
- February 20, 2018
- February 19, 2018
- April 6, 2018
- April 5, 2018
- April 4, 2018
