Early Sunday morning, March 3rd, at 1:35 a.m., Roselle Park Police responded to the 7-11 store located on West Westfield Avenue at Valley Road for a report of a dispute. Upon arrival at the store, police were directed to the restroom area where a male and two (2) females were heard arguing. Police came into contact with Byron D. Martin, 26, of Piscataway, NJ. Martin had visible signs of injuries to his face and arms but refused to provide police with his name. As officers were investigating a possible assault, Martin reportedly became combative and struck Patrolman John Deegan. Martin then fought with Deegan and Patrolman Brian Swick, police state. After several minutes of a violent struggle, Martin was taken into custody. Outside, as Martin was being readied for transport, he repeatedly kicked Patrolman Swick in the chest.
Once at police headquarters, Martin was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He was transported to the Union County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday morning February 26th, Taye Hasley, 32, of Piscataway, NJ was arrested by Patrolman Brian Swick for DWI. Swick stopped Hasley’s 2009 Cadillac on Hawthorne Street after observing several traffic violations. During his roadside investigation, Swick reportedly found Hasley to be impaired and placed him under arrest. Before Halsey could be secured, he tried fleeing on foot from Patrolman Swick. Halsey was tackled by Swick but Hasley continued his efforts to flee by violently struggling to break free from Swick, according to police. Swick was able to take Hasley into custody. At police headquarters, Hasley was charged with DWI, DWI in a school zone, careless driving, and improper display of tags.
