Sherman Elementary School fifth grade student Isabelle Latorre will be performing as Ellen in the musical “The People Garden” at the Hamilton Stage for the Performing Arts on May 5th and 6th. Isabelle recently performed as one of the Lost Boys singing “I Won’t Grow Up” at the Sherman School Variety Show two weeks ago on April 13th.
In speaking with Anna, Isabelle’s mother, she said that her daughter became interested in musical theatre after performing in a Roselle Park performance of “The Little Mermaid” two years ago. Since then, Isabelle has been in the Union County Performing Arts Center presentation of Seussical Kids in December of 2017.
“The People Garden” with book, lyrics, and music by Paul Armento is a 60-minute family-friendly production that takes place during just one day when a kindergarten class gets a substitute teacher. The musical deals with themes such as honesty, sharing, bullying, loss, and friendship.
The musical started as an audiotape and coloring book 25 years ago in 1993. Four years later, “The People Garden” had its theatrical debut in the Garden State and subsequently toured New Jersey schools as a social education program. Since then, it ran for two years Off-Broadway at the York Theater in New York City and has toured elementary and middle schools for over a decade.
Laurel Graeber of The New York Times stated, “Paul Armento, the writer and director, has created clever numbers . . . captured a 5-year-old’s sense of humor and done the nearly impossible: made it funny for adults.”
The People Garden is recommended for ages 5 and older.
There are six performances that will run from May 4th through May 6th. Isabella will be Ellen at the 11 a.m. performances for Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th.
Tickets are available online (link).
