Police Activity Report (January 16 – 21, 2014)

On Thursday, Roselle Park Police responded to the area of Locust Street and West Westfield Avenue on a report of a suspicious female. A description of the female was given and minutes later located by Pateolman Alexander Lanza in the area of 100 block of Warren Avenue, entering a nearby residential garage. After making contact with the female who was identified as Caroline Farula, age 52 of Roselle Park, she was found to have an outstanding Union County Sheriffs No Bail Warrant along with an outstanding Roselle Park Municipal court Warrant in the amount of $500. Farula was arrested for the warrant and committed to the Union County Jail awaiting a court appearance.

On Saturday, at 2:46 a.m., Patrolman Brian Macdonald conducted a motor vehicle stop on Camden Street on a 2001 Honda for an equipment violation. The driver, Virginia Caballero, age 42 from Spanaway, Washington was found to have an outstanding Roselle Park Municipal Court warrant for $81. Caballero was arrested on the warrant, posted bail, and released with a court date.

On Sunday, at 9:22 p.m., Patrolman John Fitzgerald responded to the 600 block of Faitoute Avenue on a report of a motor vehicle crash involving multiple vehicles. Two parked motor vehicles appeared to be struck and one of them was pushed up onto the sidewalk area. The 2006 BMW that allegedly caused the accident had heavy front end damage. As officer Fitzgerald conducted his investigation regarding the accident, he was approached by a male identified as Michael Schiavo, age 25 from Mt. Arlington.
Schiavo stated to the officer, “this is DUI. The driver is drunk.”
When Patrolman Fitzgerald asked Schiavo who the driver was, he stated that he was the driver. The officer asked how he knew he was DUI and Schiavo indicated that he had been drinking at a nearby restaurant, should not have been driving, that he was drunk, and to arrest him. Following the officers investigation, Michael Schiavo was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI along with other traffic violations. During the processing of Schiavo, he purposely urinated within the holding area of headquarters and was charged with criminal mischief. No one was found to be injured during the crash. He was released with a court date.
At 12:35 a.m., Patrolmen Brian Macdonald and Brian Swick were dispatched to the 100 block of West Westfield Avenue on a report of a male who had been sitting on the steps of a local apartment complex for an extended period and he was not familiar to the residents in the area. Officers located and identified Stefan Duris, age 32, from Westfield. Duris advised that he was waiting for over an hour for the bus. It was discovered that Duris had an open container of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. A record check for Duris revealed an outstanding Tinton Falls Municipal Court warrant for $300. As the officers attempted to place Duris in custody, he reportedly tried to flee on foot and resisted officers. Allegedly, he physically assaulted both officers by swinging his arms, causing scratches on the officer’s faces and hands. He was subsequently subdued and handcuffed. After being arrested, Duris was found to be in possession of multiple knives, (under 50 grams) of suspected marijuana, (under one ounce) of suspected cocaine, and various drug paraphernalia. He was ultimately charged for the same and committed to the Union County Jail. Bail set at $51,000 by Roselle Park Municipal Court Judge Gary Bundy.

On Monday,at 2:40 a.m. Patrolman Brian Macdonald conducted a motor vehicle stop on the Garden State Parkway North bound entrance ramp with a 1994 Honda for equipment violations. The passenger of the Honda, identified as Kenneth Leger, was found to have an outstanding Egg Harbor Township Municipal Court warrant for $301. He was placed under arrest for the warrant and was released with a court date after posting bail.

At 4:19 a.m., Ptl. Dean Khallaf conducted a traffic stop on Union Rd with a 2001 Honda for an equipment violation. The driver, Gabriel Jimenez, age 22 from Elizabeth was found to be in possession of (under 50 grams) of CDS Marijuana and Paraphernalia. He was arrested for same, issued criminal complaints and motor vehicle summonses. Jimenez was released with a court date.
On Tuesday, Patrolman Dean Khallaf conducted a motor vehicle stop on Galloping Hill Road with a 1996 BMW for a moving violation. The driver, Kevin Mendoza, age 19 from North Bergen, was found to be in possession of (under 50 grams) suspected CDS marijuana and paraphernalia which was observed in the glove box upon retrieving his credentials. He was placed under arrest, issued criminal complaints, and motor vehicle summonses. Mendoza was released with a court date.
