On Thursday afternoon, March 15th, the Roselle Park Fire Department (RPFD) received a call just before 5 p.m. regarding a fire at the Sunrise Diner located on the corner of Locust Street and West Westfield Avenue. According to reported accounts, one or more individuals had been smoking behind the restaurant which apparently ignited scrap cardboard that was nearby. Several RPFD units responded extinguishing the fire after several minutes. They cleared the scene just over half-an-hour later. No injuries were reported and no major damage occurred. Service at Sunrise resumed soon afterwards.
According to Deputy Fire Chief Ray Parenteau, the fire appeared to be an accidental trash fire. Some boxes and the fence was on fire upon arrival, with a little extension of the fire into a storage area at the rear of the building. The fire was knocked down quickly and overhaul was performed. No one was injured and minimal damage to the storage area.
