2016 RPHS Girls’ Softball Team Celebrated For Winning Seasonthumbnail

Players of the 2016 Roselle Park High School (RPHS) Girl’s Softball Team – which finished with a 19-13 record this year – were presented with Certificates of Recognition at the June 16, 2016 Mayor & Council meeting. In addition to winning the Union County Conference Mountain Division Championship, the team also won the North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 State Sectional Championship with a 4-3 win over Dayton High School.

Coach Frances Maggio, finishing this season with 317 career wins, spoke before presenting the certificates. He recounted how the season got off to a rough start with a 7-10 record at the end of April but that the team rallied back after then to win 12 out of their next 15 games.

Certificates were presented to the following players of the 2016 Varsity Softball Roster:

First-Year Students

  • Madison Hummel (pitcher)
  • Hailey Ortega (outfield)

Sophomores

  • Angelina Chacon (shortstop)
  • Merissa Gilic (outfield)
  • Melisa Gjokaj (pitcher)
  • Paige Junior (infield/outfield)

Juniors

  • Samantha Graves (left field/pitcher)
  • Erin Kennedy (first base)
  • Dara Czernikowski (outfield)

Seniors

  • Caitlin Gibson (third base/co-captain)
  • Ellen Erickson (catcher/co-captain)
  • Miranda Hummel (second base)
  • Cassilyn Scott (statistician)

Coach Maggio addressed those present, expressing his and his team’s gratitude, “I just want to take this opportunity to thank the mayor and the council for recognizing us. It’s very much appreciated and a great experience and memory for the girls and myself.”
